Unique Program Features
Lifestyle Medicine: Recognition of the importance of lifestyle has led to an evolution in our curriculum. We include modules in nutrition, physical activity, mental well-being and behavior change. Students learn how lifestyle can prevent or cause disease, how to gather a prevention and lifestyle history, how to apply skills related to nutrition assessment and counseling and about stress management and self-care. Together, these elements of our curriculum help shift the focus from disease to health promotion. Interdisciplinary Education: Team-based instruction occurs within the didactic and clinical phases of the curriculum with experiences involving various mixes of medical, nurse anesthesia, physician assistant, pharmacy, social work, and nursing students to ensure a rich experience in the area of role socialization.Simulation: Our learning spaces include simulated patient exam rooms, operating rooms, emergency rooms, and virtual reality training rooms. Equipped with high-fidelity simulation trainers and actual healthcare equipment and supplies, our learning environments make complete immersion into the simulated healthcare experience possible. Enrichment Tracks: Students have the option to pursue specialized interests through enrichment tracks offered in collaboration with the School of Medicine. Pathways open to PA students include medical ethics and global health. PA students may also opt to earn a Diploma in Tropical Medicine through the Baylor College of Medicine National School of Tropical Medicine.Community Involvement: All enrolled students in the program are required to complete a minimum of 12 hours of service learning within a specified community agency by the end of the didactic year. Service learning integrates service and academic learning to promote understanding of course content while helping students develop insights regarding the range of services required to deal effectively with complex social issues and problems.
